  1. One of the simplest and quickest solutions is to just run cold water over a wash cloth or face cloth and apply it to your itchy skin.
  2. Or you could apply an ice pack to your skin. Did you know that cold and itch both move along the same nerve fibers? That explains why applying anything cold to your skin will give you relief.
  3. Use a lemon.  Squeezing lemons on your itchy spots will help reduce the inflammation – lemons have anti-inflammatory and mild anaesthetic properties.
  4. Aloe vera for itchy skinUse aloe vera. Aloe vera has long been used for skin burns, but it also soothes itchy skin. Take a leaf, slice it open and spread the gel on your skin. It’s cooling and calming. Aloe is really easy to grow, either indoors or out, in almost any climate, so keep a plant handy at home.
  5. Use fresh herbs. Basil and mint contain eugenol which is a mild topical anaesthetic.  Thyme can have a numbing effect when used on the skin. Make a “tea” with these herbs and spread it over your itchy skin to get relief.
  6. Take a cool water bath and let the water soothe you all over.
  7. Soak in a colloidal oatmeal bath. (You can either buy colloidal oatmeal, or save yourself some money and just buy normal oatmeal (NOT instant) and grind it down to a fine powder). You’ll need some warm water to dissolve the oatmeal initially.
  8. You can also use baking soda (don’t use it if you have broken skin) in a cool bath.
  9. Epsom salt is great for soothing itchy skin (as well as for relieving dry skin). It’s often used for sore muscles and cramps, but if you dilute about 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt into a cup of water, then apply the mixture to your skin using a wash cloth, it can give you cool relief.
  10. You can also use Epsom salt in a bath for all-over relief.  (It will also help to remove skin impurities and dead skin).
Fascinating Fact: cold and itch both move along the same nerve fibers! That explains why applying anything cold to your skin will give you relief.

And of course, always seek medical attention for severe cases of allergic reaction. There may be more to the situation than just itchy skin.

These simple, inexpensive home remedies will banish that itch in no time!
