Good News – A Delightfully Happy Refugee Story!

I get really upset when I keep seeing anti – refugee sentiment. All over the world. Are there some bad refugees? Of course! But most refugees are simply normal people, wanting to survive.

Who would want to be a refugee? It’s not by choice. Their home, for whatever reason, has become un-liveable – from war and violence, or water / food shortages, or persecution, or climate change, or other desperate circumstances.

refugee arrivals are downMost refugees simply want a better life for themselves and their families – which is EXACTLY what we all want too.

OK. Rant over! Below, you’ll find a video with a delightful story about a refugee who came to Britain from Syria. He couldn’t swim – yet faced a truly terrifying sea journey. Now, not only has he taught himself to swim, he’s aiming to compete as an Olympic swimmer!

First though, here are some interesting reasons why migrants and refugees are good for a country.

My Migration

And by the way, I’ve migrated to different countries during my life. Not out of desperation at all, I was simply looking for a different and better life.

It’s not always easy – but without doubt, I’ve benefited from the moves.

And I’ve never taken any type of benefits from another country. Just worked and paid my taxes and contributed to society. Most migrants and refugees want to do the same.

Of course, there are always a minority of people who give the majority a bad name. And the media don’t help, they often highlight the bad cases, without mentioning all the good, normal people.

Why Refugees Bring Benefits

Statistically, refugees are good for a  country.

  • Refugees don’t “steal” jobs from the natives of the country they move to. Instead, they often take jobs that many natives don’t want to or won’t do.
  • This allows natives to progress further up the career ladder as they can speak the language perfectly, which refugees may take a while to do.
  • If you are brave enough to travel to a new country, you’re brave enough to take risks, including with jobs.  Migrants are more likely to be entrepreneurs, who set up their own businesses.,  In the US for example, while migrants are 15 percent of the population, they represent 25 percent of entrepreneurs. By creating new businesses, migrants also create new jobs for everyone – they create about 1.5 million jobs every year.
  • And they pay tax, which means everyone benefits from tax-payer services such as roads and public spaces.
  • 30 years of data from Western Europe shows that by creating new jobs for others, paying taxes and increasing local demand for goods and services, migrants FAR outweigh the governmental costs of newcomers.
