I like to use spices to liven up my home-cooked meals – and some of them have the added benefit of helping to turn the Battle of the Bulge in your favor!

Turmeric

I’m lucky to live in a country with a vast array of Indian cuisine, and many Indian dishes contain turmeric. It is a great inflammation fighter and antioxidant. Inflammation is all-too-common now, and apart from the health problems it causes, it can make losing excess weight difficult.

How to use Look up Indian recipes online – they’re yummy and many use easy-to-find ingredients. You can also sprinkle this versatile spice on just about any food, though it does have a sharp, strong flavor. Add turmeric powder to your fresh juices and smoothies for a lovely kick.

This common spice has been used for centuries to treat a number of health problems, including high blood sugar levels.

Increased blood sugar levels can cause fat storage. Cinnamon also works to suppress your appetite, making it a “superfood” for promoting weight loss.

How to use Sprinkle some cinnamon powder in your morning coffee, and even over your breakfast.

Cayenne pepper

Dihydrocapsiate is the tongue-twisting compound found in Cayenne and other peppers which boosts your body’s ability to burn fat.

How to use Add cayenne powder to your favorite recipes to spice them up a bit – I add it to chilli con carne and tacos and smoothies.

Ginger

Ginger is a root that is very versatile. It helps reduce food cravings and your appetite.

How to use You can grate or finely chop it and add to most meals – saute it with your onions and chilli. Add it raw to smoothies and juices for a savory kick. Or boil it to make ginger tea.

When added to other spices and herbs which promote weight loss, cumin is proven to help as an appetite suppressant and healthy body weight regulator. I enjoy its slightly aniseed flavor.

How to use Cumin is popular in taco seasonings and curries as well as many Asian dishes – and is also as versatile as your imagination will allow.

Mustard

Mustard and other spices which have a hot or “spicy” flavor turn up your body’s heat-producing power which helps with weight loss.

How to use Hot English mustard is great with a steak, and tabasco or chilli sauces go well with almost any meal to liven it up.

You won’t lose a huge amount of weight instantly with these spices, but they can help with weight loss longer-term and of course, add great flavor and interest to your dishes in the short-term!
