When You Start Feeling Stress – Just Stop!

Stress is one of the biggest contributors to illness today.

Let’s think about that. It’s bad enough feeling stressed. But you’re also making yourself ill. Why is that?

When you’re stressed, your immune system, your digestion, and your reproductive functions are all repressed.  Your body does that, so that you can deal with the immediate danger.

Sometimes that’s good. If a child runs into the path of a car, you NEED to be able to run quickly.

But most of the time, you don’t need to run.

You might be stressed because there’s always too much to do, and yet another deadline. More people demanding your attention.  Yet you still need to eat and sleep and get some exercise and spend quality time with your family and ……..

And if you’re stressed regularly (or all the time), then your body is weakened. You become vulnerable to viruses, bacteria, and other environmental toxins.  Your body ages prematurely too. Oh, and according to Yale University, your tense mood negatively affects the people around you!

Your reaction counts!

Here’s an interesting thought. How often have you noticed that a stressful situation – a difficult boss, kids misbehaving, money worries, whatever – doesn’t seem to phase some people?

It’s all about how you react to the situation:-

  • If you tense up when you’re in a stressful situation, your body will go into stress mode.
  • If you stay calm in that same situation, your body won’t activate the stress response.

Stress – Just Stop!

stop before stress takes overIf you’re feeling stressed, just STOP for a moment.

  • Walk away
  • Take slow, deep breaths
  • Move your shoulders in circles or shrug them
  • Now, take a moment to actually identify the problem or issue. You brain will automatically start to find options and solutions once you are calmer.

Two or five minutes away isn’t going to make the situation any worse. And you’ll be protecting your health.

You Need To Be Aware

The trick is to recognise what’s happening, and change your reaction to it. That’s not always easy – but it does improve with practice.

You can choose to recognize and let go of unhealthy stress.

And isn’t it incredibly empowering to know that you have the choice?
