If We’re Alive, We Age. But Aging Gracefully IS Possible!
As long as we are alive, we’re going to get older. And as we grow into adulthood, that’s not always something we relish! If we have to grow old, most of us would rather be aging gracefully.
But how do we do that?
Well, there are a lot of different viewpoints on exactly that! But on one aspect, ALL the experts agree. Exercise is crucial to aging gracefully.
Now, before you think, yes, I’ve heard it all before (but I hate exercise / I don’t know where to start / I’m unfit / I hate exercising), hear me out!
Exercising CAN be fun – if you choose the right type(s). And when it’s fun, it doesn’t feel like a chore, it’s fun – something you WANT to do!
Perhaps you feel that exercise feels like more of a chore as you get older? I certainly did. It seemed to take more, well, effort.
But luckily, there are some exercises that are more perfectly suited to us as we age. (Thank goodness!).
And walking is one of them!
Walking is easy to take to any level – it’s easy to start (even if you’re unfit), and it’s easy to improve. It’s also very green and eco-friendly because it doesn’t need special equipment to be bought, and it doesn’t use fossil fuels.

It’s a fact that if you go slowly, are consistent in your exercise routines, and modify exercises to match your capabilities, exercise can and will become an activity in your daily life that you look forward to rather than one you avoid.
And the thing is, exercise – of whatever type – helps you to lessen or avoid the many problems that naturally occur with aging.
Osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and pneumonia are three diseases that many aging and elderly people live with on a day-to-day basis.
Because regular, gentle-to-vigorous exercise (based on your current health and physical capabilities, of course – always use common sense and contact your physician before embarking on any exercise program) can alleviate or eliminate the risks of and/or occurrence of these diseases. Let’s look at them in a bit more detail.
Aging Gracefully – Avoid Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a bone disease that affects mostly white and Asian women who are in or past the menopause years (although it does affect men as well). The bone tissue cannot replace itself as quickly as it breaks down, and the result is brittle bone that breaks easily.
Regular resistance exercise helps to combat this disease.Resistance exercise can be in the form of small weights, exercise bands, or isometric exercises. They can be performed alone, with an exercise video or DVD, or in a group. Alternate resistance exercise with power walking and you’re well on your way to reducing your risks.
Aging Gracefully – Avoid Alzheimer’s Disease
It has been shown that regular aerobic exercise helps promote healthy brain function. That means clearer thinking, less memory loss, and better cognitive function – and all of those are vital.
Exercise helps with Alzheimer’s. Even a 20-minute brisk walk will work wonders for your brain, and it will also improve circulation and promote a sense of well-being.
Aging Gracefully – Avoid Pneumonia
Pneumonia is usually brought on by something else that is taxing the immune system, like the flu virus for example. That’s why it’s vitally important to keep a strong immune system as you age.
Exercise not only helps your immune system function properly, but aerobic exercise promotes healthy heart and lung function – and a healthy set of lungs is very important in keeping pneumonia away. Power walking is an excellent aerobic exercise.
Conclusion
Aging happens, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t be healthy and happy as well. Regular exercise will enhance the state of both your body and your mind, and should be a part of your everyday life, no matter what age you are.
Aging gracefully IS possible – and exercise is hugely important in doing so.
