It’s been used in Ayurvedic medicine for hundreds of years, and now the rest of the world is recognizing its power. Ashwagandha is an adaptogen – a special class of herb that helps reduce stress, improve your brain function and help you to relax and sleep.

As with all herbal medicine, there aren’t huge numbers of clinical trials, but research shows that ashwagandha helps with –

  • Reducing stress and anxiety by up to 70%, promoting a sense of calm
  • Better sleep without the grogginess of synthetic sleeping tablets
  • Improved Memory, attention span and reaction time
  • If you’re active, ashwagandha may reduce fatigue and improve your stamina without the caffeine crash.
  • Better hormone balance in both men and women, improving your metabolic function.

The shrub or herb is also known as Indian Ginseng. The roots and stems are dried and then made into a powder.  Ayurvedic medicine often recommends mixing the powder with honey or warm milk, but in fact it can be added to any drink, and even juices and smoothies.

Today, most people take it as a supplement. You can also buy it as a tea.

What to Look for in an Ashwagandha Supplement

Many companies offer this herb as a supplement – but beware, there are synthetic forms of this plant extract, and some supplements also have other additives that may not be ideal.

Always choose certified organic supplements that are additive-free.

Look for 3rd-party testing and certification for purity and strength.

KSM-66 extract is one of the most researched forms of ashwagandha, and it’s clinically proven to support stress relief, sleep, and brain function.

Most supplements come in pill or capsule form, but another option is liposomal ashwagandha. You put drops under your tongue, or add them to drinks and smoothies, and this gives you better absorption.

As you know, Amazon sells just about everything, and yes, they also sell these supplements – check them out here –

When to Take Ashwagandha for Best Results

ashwagandha Withania somnifera Fruit wikipediaIt depends on what you want to achieve.

For stress & anxiety relief → Take it in the morning or before stressful situations.

For better sleep → Take it 30-60 minutes before bed.

For energy & performance → Take it before your workout or in the morning.

How Much to Take?

Most studies suggest 300-600 mg per day is effective.

If you’re taking the liposomal tincture, you’ll probably need less because it’s absorbed more easily.

Can Everyone Take This Supplement?

Almost everyone.

However, if you’re already taking prescription drugs or if you have diabetes, always check with your health professional before taking.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women may want to avoid it, as it is not well tested for this.
