It’s a sad fact that as we get older, dead skin cells build up faster. This can give your skin a dull or grey look, because your pores get clogged up.

So, it’s a good idea to have a cleansing and exfoliating routine for your face.

And it’s ideal to use honey for this – it’s a wonderfully natural and effective ingredient. It’s also anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. When you use it on your skin, it acts as a humectant. That means that it attracts and preserves water, keeping your skin moist and fresh. It’s also antibacterial and an antifungal, so it’s great for skin health!

How Often?

calendar plan ahead for online shoppingMost dermatologists recommend daily cleansing, and using a gentle exfoliating scrub on a weekly basis on your face.

And of course if you can, it’s a wonderful treat – and an investment in your skin and anti-aging care – to visit a salon or spa and have a rejuvenating facial.  Ideally this should be monthly, but that’s not feasible for everyone.

Which Honey?

Raw honey is best, because it hasn’t been processed and still contains a high degree of natural elements. You can buy it in natural or organic food stores, at local markets, or online.

It’s always best to buy local honey. Honey has a very low carbon footprint, but transport adds to it, so local honey is not just fresher but also greener. And better for your local economy too.

Plus, local honey means local bees. Bees are threatened, and we need to protect bees because they pollinate our food, without which many of our crops won’t grow.

Easy Cleanser – Simple Honey for your Face

raw food - raw honeySimply place a teaspoon or so of honey onto your damp hands, rub it into your face as you would soap. Let sit for a minute then rinse and dry.

The antibacterial properties will help cleanse your pores, reduce acne, and leave your skin feeling soft and clean.

You can’t get much simpler than this!

Easy Exfoliator – Epsom Salts and Honey for your Face

Combine one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of Epsom salts or baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in a small dish. Pour the mixture onto damp hands and massage gently onto your face. Let it sit for a minute and then rinse. Pat dry.

Lastly, let’s look at easy, natural masks for your face – almost as good as a professional facial treatment (but much cheaper, and with no chemicals!).

Honey Masks for your Face

A facial at a spa can be expensive, so in-between professional facials, you can use honey to treat your skin via a homemade face mask (at a fraction of the cost!)

Honey masks can:-

  • remove impurities,
  • reduce the look of your pores, and
  • fight inflammation
  • make your skin clearer and softer
  • help reduce puffy eyes
  • decrease fine lines around your mouth and eyes

Here are a few DIY Honey Masks you can make at home.

Honey Yogurt Mask – Combine two parts plain yogurt (preferably Greek yoghurt) with one part honey in a small bowl.

With clean hands, massage the mask into your face. Let it sit for fifteen minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

  1. Cut the pumpkin and remove the skin, seeds and slimy bits.
  2. Boil the pumpkin chunks until they’re fork-tender. Depending on the size of your chunks this can take 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. Put the pumpkin into a food processor or blender and puree.
  4. Combine two teaspoons of your pumpkin puree with a teaspoon of honey and half a teaspoon of cream, whole milk or yogurt.
  5. With clean hands apply it to your face and let it sit for 20 minutes.
  6. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

(Use the rest of the pumpkin to make curried pumpkin soup, or pumpkin pie!).

Apple & Honey Mask – Combine one cored apple (keep the peel on) with a tablespoon of honey into your blender. Blend until smooth. You can store the mixture in a small mason jar in the refrigerator. When you want to use it on your face, apply it to your skin and let it sit for fifteen minutes. Rinse, pat dry and enjoy your glowing complexion. The apple has natural antioxidants and fruit acids that both clear away dead skin and leave your face feeling smooth and fresh.

Honey is such a versatile ingredient that it’s easy to use to care for your skin. For anti-aging, it’s hard to beat honey for your face!
