Eco-Friendly Make Up – Safer and Cheaper!

Eco-Friendly Make Up – Good for Us And The Planet

eco friendly makeup Of course it’s easy to buy commercial make up products.  They are heavily advertised – every day we see photos of glamourous models using a particular brand.

However, many cosmetics are problematic.

What’s the Problem with Make Up?

Many commercial products contain chemicals, some of which are harmful to us and the planet.

Many chemicals are untested for human use.

Many cosmetics or make up products contain:

  • Parabens – to extend the shelf life of a product. Parabens are absorbed by our skin and are associated with hormonal changes as well as some cancers.
  • Phthalates – used as solvents. These industrial chemicals are absorbed into the body and are associated with damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive system.
  • Cosmetics and make up may also contain formaldehyde and petroleum.

eco friendly makeup is safeIf you wear make up regularly, it doesn’t make sense to expose yourself to these dangers – why should you pay good money to be harmed?

And that’s another problem with commercial make up – it’s expensive.

Luckily though, you can get eco-friendly make up which is miles cheaper – and surprisingly easy to make!

(If you don’t want to make your own, why not buy the ingredients you need (see below) and get a friend to make them up for you – it really is easy).

Advantages of Eco-Friendly Make Up

When you avoid heavily-processed commercial cosmetics:

  • You avoid toxic chemicals on your skin all day
  • You save money
  • You help to protect the environment
  • You can get creative and emphasize your personal style
  • You can even earn money!
    • Many stores buy homemade eco-friendly make up from people and sell it
    • You can sell your eco-friendly cosmetics to your friends
    • You could even sell your green products on social media sites

People love organic, safe, green and eco-friendly products, but often don’t realize just how easy they are to make – use this to your advantage!

What You Need to Know Before You Start

eco-friendly make up needs clean jarsThere are just a few small considerations before you start going green with eco-friendly make up.

  1. Your homemade products won’t have the same shelf life as commercial products – that’s because you won’t be using chemical and artificial preservatives.  Most products will last about one month.
  2. You’re going to need a supply of containers – jars, tubes, packages – and they all need to be really, really clean before you add your eco-friendly make up to them.
  3. Remember to store your products away from light. Store them in dark containers and / or in a closed cabinet / cupboard / drawer.

Extending the Shelf Life of Eco-Friendly Make Up

There are wonderful natural preservatives that you can use to extend the shelf life of your homemade cosmetics.

  • The one most commonly used – and that is very easy to obtain – is coconut oil.
  • High-quality essential oils also extend the life of eco-friendly make up, as do anti-oxidants such as rosemary oil extract.
  • Grapefruit seed extract is a useful preservative for skincare products.

Common Ingredients for Eco-Friendly Make Up

This list of ingredients covers the most commonly used items – they are available in stores or health shops.

  • Aloe Vera – for moisture
  • Arrowroot powder – to thicken and smooth the mixture
  • Beeswax thickens and emulsifies the mixture
  • Beet powder – for colour
  • Charcoal – for eye liner and mascara
  • Cocoa powder – for colour and smoothing
  • Coconut oil or jojoba oil can both be used as preservatives
  • Mica powder – for texture, bulking and emulsifying
  • Spirulina – for green colour

How Do I Make Eco-Friendly Make Up?

Now that you know why eco-friendly make up is so much better for us and the planet, it’s time to start making your own.

One of simplest ones to make is blusher or blush, so we’ll start with that, then move on to others.

Eco-Friendly Blush

eco friendly makeup blusherBlush or blusher adds colour to your face and can also be used to contour it.

In the days before blusher, ladies used to pinch their cheeks to add color – adding powder blush is a much simpler option!

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tbsp beet powder
  • 1 Tbsp arrowroot powder
  • 3-5 drops lavender essential oil

Optional – for shimmer:

  • Ginger (for a lighter blush) OR
  • Nutmeg (for a darker blusher)

Instructions:

  1. Add the beet powder to a spotlessly clean bowl followed by the arrowroot powder, and mix well.
  2. If you prefer your blush to be darker, add more arrowroot.
  3. If you want shimmer, add ginger, or nutmeg, or both, until the colour looks right – it really is up to you.  You have total control!
  4. When all dry ingredients are evenly mixed and showing the colour you want, add the essential oil. Mix again, add to your container and store.

  • Tap the blusher brush before you apply it to your cheeks so that the excess powder falls off
