Eco-Friendly Energy Efficient TVs

How to Choose the Most Energy Efficient TVs

energy efficient tvsWhen you buy a new TV, you want it to be energy efficient. You’ll spend less on electricity,  pollute less and help to save the planet.

Here’s what to look for to make the most energy efficient TV choice:

Energy Efficient TVs – Size

One of the biggest factors in energy consumption of TVs is size.

(Yes, size matters!).

It’s very simple. Larger TVs use more energy.

Tip:  Remember, when you’re looking at TVs in a shop, you might buy what looks like a small one, because it’s smaller than the other ones in the store, but when you get it home, it might be too big.

Measure your TV space and stick to the size that’s best for you.  Large TVs can completely dominate a room – if that’s the only function of the room, then great, but if it’s your lounge as well, it might not be appropriate.  And of course, larger TVs use more energy.

Energy Efficient TVs – Technology

energy efficient tv optionsThe current technology for energy efficient TVs is LCD TVs with LED backlight. These are often called LED TVs. They will give you the most energy efficiency.

Extra energy efficiency comes with an option called Local Dimming.

Be aware that TVs with LED backlight have quite a narrow viewing angle. When choosing a new TV, stand in front of the TV, check how it looks, then move off to either side and see the difference.  Different brands and differing quality will have better or worse offset viewing.

Plasma TVs are generally more expensive and offer superb picture quality, as well as much broader viewing angle. However, they use considerably more energy than LCD TVs with LED backlight.

Energy Efficient TVs – 3D

If you’re looking for a 3D TV, choose passive (rather than active) 3D.  Passive is more comfortable for long viewing sessions.  Some reviewers say the quality is not quite as good as active (active 3D is normally more expensive and needs expensive 3D glasses), but passive 3D is what is used in cinemas.

Choose a TV which comes with 3D glasses which don’t need power.  They are easier to wear, save power, and can be replaced easily and cheaply.

Energy Efficient TVs – End of Life

Check that the manufacturer will take back your TV when you are finished with it. This allows the company to recycle the parts and help reduce the huge amount of electronics in landfills around the world.

Energy Efficient TVs – Other Good Features

  • A ‘presence sensor’ that will automatically switch off when you leave the room
  • Reflection reduction (useful if you have a window behind you, for example)
  • A light sensor which will automatically dim or brighten the TV depending upon the level of light in the room
  • A zero-watt energy-saving switch
  • The User Manual displayed on-screen rather than printed, which saves paper.

  • The reflection reduction is absolutely can’t live without once you have had it once. It may as well be high def for me. Just a new TV feature that is must have.

  • Hi Green Goddess,

That really does make so much sense that the size of the television would impact the energy it uses and how ecologically friendly and green it is.

Thank you for breaking down your recommendations to the different sized of TV sets that couples purchase.
