Waste isn’t always properly disposed of. But here’s an eco-friendly sewage system that’s inspired by cows!
I found this on the BBC and thought it was interesting. We have the solutions – let’s implement them! Often, the solutions are so beautifully simple, sustainable and affordable. And this eco-friendly sewage system certainly is!
Below is the transcript of the video, if you prefer to read instead.
The Problem – Why We Need Eco-friendly Sewage Systems
80% of the world’s wastewater is dumped, untreated. This leads to poor sanitation and disease.
This is a particular problem in Bangalore, India, where the lakes contain so much sewage that they catch fire.
Treatment plants can be expensive to set up and run. They use bacteria to break down the waste – those bacteria feed on oxygen. And to get oxygen into the waste, costly blower motors are used. They’re definitely not eco-friendly sewage systems.
Cows? Really?
But Bangalore resident Tharon Kumar looked to cows for a solution.
Cows are expert digesters. They have 4 stomach chambers that use bacteria that don’t need oxygen to break down the grass into nutrients, water, gas and waste.
Tharun and his team designed an eco-friendly sewage system that mimics this.
How This Eco-friendly Sewage System Works
It uses bacteria from cow dung – so there’s no need for blower motors.
In fact, it doesn’t need any power at all, because gravity moves the sewage along. The further it travels along the system, the cleaner it gets. Solid waste sinks to the bottom, and the rest is converted into gas and clear water, which is safe to use outside.
So far, 50 eco-friendly sewage treatment plants have been built, and the team plan to export to Africa.
Cows could help to solve the world’s sewage problem!
