Not Sleeping Well is Horrible! Use All-Natural Foods to Help You Sleep Instead of Pills

Sleep young woman in bed - natural

Many people don’t get enough sleep – and it’s probably a bigger problem than you realise. Luckily though, instead of reaching for sleeping tablets, there are some foods which can help. Try this all-natural approach first, with these foods to help you sleep.

It’s a problem when you don’t get enough sleep. It’s not just that you’re tired the next day (and that’s bad enough!).  But you need to sleep well in order for your body to heal, to remove toxins and impurities you’ve picked during the day, and (of course) to rest.

Can You Eat Foods to Help You Sleep at Any Time?

It’s pretty important to eat at the right times.

Eating a large meal shortly before you go to bed, is never a good idea. No matter how many of the right foods you eat, your digestive system will be active at the same time as you want to go to sleep, and that’s not good.

The foods to help you sleep should be eaten in the evening to get the greatest benefit. Eat these “sleep foods” with dinner, or as a small snack a few hours before you go to bed.

So, what foods help you sleep?

The Best Foods to Help You Sleep

  • Almonds and walnuts boost your melatonin levels – melatonin is known as the ‘sleep hormone’. You only need about a handful of these nuts – a nice, light evening snack. Add a teaspoon of raw honey if you wish – this will help your brain to produce more melatonin.
  • Tart cherry juice is an interesting option. New research shows that tart cherry juice is one of the best foods to give you more and better-quality sleep.
  • kiwi for weight loss smoothiesOr try 2 kiwi fruits. In a study, adults ate two kiwis one hour before going to bed for 4 weeks. They ended up falling asleep 42% more quickly than before, slept for longer, and slept better throughout the night.
  • 1 or 2 squares of dark chocolate (at least 70%) can also help you to sleep (that’s definitely worth a try) ?
  • When you’re eating your dinner, try to include kale, spinach or mustard greens with your meal. They’re rich in calcium which combines well with other sleep nutrients to help you to fall asleep more quickly.
  • And speaking of dinner, oily fish can help you sleep too. Salmon, tuna and trout are best.
  • I’m sure you’ve heard of chamomile tea – this has helped people sleep for centuries. Passionflower herbal tea also works well.

Finally, it’s not a food, but getting some vitamin D from the sun during the day also helps you to sleep.

Foods to Avoid

Just a quick note – try to avoid high-fat and/or spicy foods before bed. And caffeine of course. Alcohol may help you to fall asleep more quickly, but it disturbs restful sleep later.

It’s really frustrating if you can’t sleep! It’s good to know that you can eat foods to help you sleep, and avoid ones that keep you awake.

Here’s to a good night’s sleep!
