My mother’s hair turned grey / gray when I was a teenager and still living at home. She was horrified. My sister got grey hair at a very early age. Neither of them were happy about it. Very few women seemed to like gray hair.

It’s my perception that it’s slightly different for men. Gray-haired men often look distinguished, dependable, nicely mature. While society seems to want women to look younger.

But this is changing. Some young celebrities have shown off grey or silver highlights (Rihanna, for example) – and it seems to have caught on.

In fact, many women are openly celebrating the fact that they are no longer coloring their hair. ((And it’s more eco-friendly too!).

If you’re going to go grey, there are some things you should know in order to pull it off. Here are some useful tips.

Long Gray Hair is Just Fine!

There’s no rule that says gray hair has to be short.

If you’re young, silver-grey hair in youthful styles makes a striking statement.

Older adults can wear long grey styles, too – just choose one that fits your face.

Long grey hair also looks great tied up in an up-do.

Colour – Look What You Can Wear Now!

Some people who go grey (either naturally or by coloring) may be surprised to find that they can now wear colours they didn’t look good in before.

Couldn’t wear red? Grey hair looks great with red, and it also shows off pink, emerald green, and royal or navy blue beautifully.

Makeup Adjustments

If you’re going grey, you’ll want to take that into consideration when you put on your makeup. Gray hair MAY make you look washed-out. Pinks, reds, and corals look good

If you haven’t worn blush or blusher in the past, now is a good time to start. This is also a great time to go with some colorful eye shadow.

Highlights

Hairdressers may suggest you get a slight violet tint to avoid yellowing, especially if you have white hair rather than grey.
