Top Tips for Keeping Your Tech Sustainable

You Can’t Live Without Your Phone, TV ……  Here are the Best Ways to Keep Your Tech Sustainable

The vast majority of us now rely on technology every single day – such is the way of the world. From our professional lives to leisure time, phones, laptops and televisions are crucial to so many different aspects of modern life. But when used in the wrong way, they can come at the detriment of the planet.

Fortunately, using the latest tech and being eco-conscious don’t have to be mutually exclusive things, and it’s becoming easier than ever to make our tech habits more sustainable. Here are three ways you can limit the harmful effects your gadgets could be having on the environment.

1. Declutter

Whilst you might think this is a victimless crime, all of these things require more energy to keep them on your device, so close down web pages and delete any old emails when you no longer need them.

On top of this, it can be helpful to unsubscribe from any unwanted newsletters or other email updates from companies that you might never use. Sending one email generates four grams of CO2e, and when you consider all of the internet users across the globe, it’s easy to see how the internet’s carbon footprint can quickly add up.

2. Give our natural resources a break

According to one study, it’s estimated that 70kg of natural resources are required to manufacture just one smartphone. And with Greenpeace suggesting that upwards of seven billion smartphones have been produced since 2007, that’s a huge drain on our planet’s resources.

The first thing you can do to address this problem is to buy second-hand devices, and recycle your kit at the end of its lifespan. Many people buy a new phone every couple of years, so it’s important to look at both buying and selling habits when it comes to making your tech more sustainable.

Secondly, taking better care of your gadgets will also help to ease the drain on resources, since they’ll need replacing less often, and spare parts won’t be required.

As well as making the manufacturing process more eco-friendly, these conglomerates are also finding ways to make their user-friendly gadgets more sustainable throughout their lifespan.

All new smartphones and laptops will come equipped with their own energy-saving features that can be switched on at the touch of a button. These include things like screen timeout, low-power mode or brightness settings.

Using these handy tools will not only help you to save energy, but it’ll also help to extend your tech’s battery life – something every user craves.
