When your head feels blocked-up and heavy, you just want some instant relief. Instead of using over-the-counter medicines, try this all-natural decongestant spray – it works!
Whether it’s seasonal allergies or blocked sinuses or winter sniffles and sneezes, essential oils are a safe and effective remedy.
Read on for a simple recipe, as well as different ways to use it. Plus, a bonus recipe for killing germs!
What This Natural Decongestant Spray Does for You
When you feel all blocked up, you want something that can open up your nose and lungs to let you breathe more easily. You might also want to loosen phlegm and mucus.
And that’s exactly what these 4 essential oils do!
Here’s why they’re so effective –
Oregano Oil can suppress coughing and loosen up any phlegm and mucus, making you feel more comfortable.
Peppermint Oil is full of menthol which helps to relax the muscles of your windpipe so you can breathe easier.
Tea Tree Oil is Nature’s antiseptic. It helps to slow or stop the growth of bacteria that cause sinus and respiratory issues, and it can kill airborne viruses and bacteria. (Note – tea tree oil may not be suitable for some children and pets).
Lemon Oil has a lovely fresh, clean smell. It relaxes your air passageways and increases airflow to the lungs. It is anti-inflammatory and reduces breathing stress.
When you mix these 4 essential oils, you get a powerful, all-natural remedy to help treat respiratory and nasal congestion.
Cold weather can make you look and feel older. Don’t let it!
Recipe for All-Natural Decongestant Spray
Simply mix together equal parts of peppermint, oregano, lemon and tea tree oils.
For example, you could use 10 drops of each oil. The important thing is to use the same amount of each oil.
How to Use It in a Spray or Diffuser
The simplest (and cheapest) way to use these essential oils is to add them to a spray bottle with some water, and simply spray or spritz it into the air around you. Refresh it regularly.
Alternatively, a diffuser will save you having to spray. Simply follow the manufacturer’s directions for the ratio of water to essential oils. The diffuser will automatically disperse the essential oils into the air of a room.
Other Ways to Use the Decongestant Spray
You can inhale the essential oils using steam – add the oils in the recipe to a steaming bath, or add them to a bowl of hot water, cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam for several minutes.
Or dilute the oils in coconut or jojoba oil and pour a little onto your palms. Rub your hands together, cup your hands over your mouth and nose, and take a few deep breaths.
You can also add the diluted oils your wrists, neck, or other pressure points.
Bonus Recipe for Killing Germs
The old saying “Prevention is better than cure” is still true today. To stop germs from reaching you in the first place, keep your home germ-free (and smelling great).
Try using equal parts of these essential oils.
- Clove oil
- Rosemary oil
- Lemon oil
- Cinnamon Bark oil
- Eucalyptus oil
This combination helps to kill bacteria, viruses, spores and more.
It’s great for kitchen counters as well as tables and desks. Use it also on door handles.
You can spray it on door frames and thresholds as a bug or insect repellent.
And carry a tiny spray bottle of it with you to use in shops, public toilets, airports, on airplane tables and call buttons – anywhere really.
Remember!
Essential oils are safe and have been used for centuries. But remember – a little goes a long way! Always listen your body.
It’s wonderful what these oils can do.
