What An Amazing Story! She Won The Lottery, Then She Gave it Away, And Now She’s Happier Than Ever!
Rachel Lapierre, from Montreal, Canada, won the lottery. It’s what we all dream of isn’t it?
Her future was safe and secure, because her prize was $1,000 a week for life. (Can you imagine!).
Of course she was thrilled. So, what would you do, if you won the lottery?
Well, Rachel says “It’s nice to have a new car, a new home, a new everything. It can really be fun but you don’t need that to be happy”.
She’s right, of course. But how many people would think that way? I’ve seen reports of people who have won the lottery, bought a whole pile of expensive “stuff”, and then gone bankrupt. It just doesn’t make sense.
So could there be truth to the saying that money doesn’t make you happy? I think there is – although it’s not quite as simple as that.
If you’re struggling to make ends meet, it’s difficult to be happy. But if you’re constantly worried about all your “stuff”, and storing it, and keeping it clean, and insuring it, and protecting it against theft, then the money that bought you that stuff in the first place, hasn’t made you happy either.
Money certainly makes life easier, but I think it’s your acceptance and enjoyment of your life that counts towards making you happy.
So, let’s get back to the woman who won the lottery.
Rachel Lapierre sounds like a very practical woman. She says that when you’re born, you have nothing. And when you go, you also go with nothing. That’s certainly very true.
But what you DO have when you go, is your memories, the legacy of what you did during your lifetime.
Before she won the lottery in 2013, Rachael had set up a charity that helped people in need. Of course, the charity got a huge boost after her lottery win.
And she continues her work today. I like her description of her work – she says she promotes “good deeds“. It could be taking someone to hospital, or getting a bike for a child, or providing food for a local family. Or even just taking the time to listen to someone on the telephone if they’re lonely. I like that! (It’s also very green and eco-friendly).
She says happiness comes from the heart.
Money has indeed brought her happiness – by giving it away!
