Got Enough Magnesium? (And What To Do If You Haven’t)

Do You Know If You Have Enough Magnesium in Your Body? Here’s What You Might Experience If You Don’t

magnesium 12 on periodic table

It’s interesting. Magnesium is one of the most common minerals we have inside us – it’s normally abundant or plentiful in your body. Yet many people are deficient – they don’t have enough magnesium to keep them fit and healthy. Are you one of them?

It’s used in so many body functions that it’s surprisingly important. For example, magnesium helps your brain to work well, so that you avoid ‘brain fog’. If you constantly get bad headaches or even migraines, it might be due to a lack of magnesium. Perhaps you’re not sleeping well, or you have numbness or tingling in your arms and legs, or you’re always tired.

But here’s the thing. There can be lots of OTHER causes for any of these things.

And that means that upping your levels might NOT help.

But perhaps you aren’t getting enough of this mineral through what you eat. If that’s the case, have a look at your diet. I’ll list magnesium-rich foods below – it certainly can’t do any harm to make sure you eat more of them (did I hear dark chocolate?).

Note: This is NOT medical advice! Always check with your healthcare professional before making changes.

Could Magnesium Be An Alternative to Migraine Drugs?

Research shows that if you have too much calcium in your nerve cells, your brain cells get over-stimulated and you’re more likely to get headaches and migraines. Magnesium controls the level of calcium in nerve cells, so that your brain doesn’t get over-stimulated.

Calcium channel blockers may be prescribed for chronic migraines, but perhaps you might want to look at your magnesium levels first – it might be an alternative to the side-effects of drugs.

Tiredness

If you’re feeling tired and fatigued, there can be a million different causes.

Magnesium is involved in energy production in your body, so it may help to make you feel less tired.

Constipation

If you are constipated, it could be because you aren’t eating enough fiber and roughage in your diet. But magnesium can also help to soften stools.

Lack of Sleep

enough magnesium may help sleepIf you’re not sleeping properly, it can be difficult to function properly. When you’re tired, nothing seems to work right.

I’ve known people who sleep better after improving their magnesium levels – but I also know people for whom it has had no effect at all.

If you’re not sleeping well, it could really help to up your intake. But if that’s not what’s causing your insomnia, then it won’t help.

Cramps

As I mentioned earlier, magnesium is important for your nerves to work properly. If you’re having odd muscle spasms and painful cramps in your legs and feet, or bad menstrual cramps, it could be that you’re low in this mineral. Interestingly, this is one of the most common early signs of magnesium deficiency.

Numbness and Tingling

A common side effect of diabetes and some cancer treatments is numbness and/or tingling in your hands and feet. It MAY be due to a mineral deficiency – but there are many causes for numbness. It certainly won’t do you any harm to eat lots of magnesium-rich foods, to see if there’s an improvement.

How to Get More Magnesium

There are 3 main ways to get more of this important mineral.

  1. Eating more magnesium-rich foods – see below
  2. A bath of Epsom salts – it’s nice and relaxing! (Epsom salts are a form of magnesium – you absorb it through your skin while you soak).
  3. Taking supplements. You can buy over-the-counter supplements, or even a lotion that you put directly on your skin – this is great if your digestive system is problematic because it avoids the digestive tract.

Magnesium-Rich Foods

The best sources of this mineral are green, leafy vegetables (e.g. spinach, Swiss chard) and sprouts. Pumpkin seeds, nuts, dark chocolate and avocado are also good.

Modern Food is Deficient in Nutrients

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Processed foods are not healthy and don’t contain essential nutrients. You may not be getting enough of this vital mineral in your diet – using one or more of these 3 methods to up your levels might just solve some health problems for you!
