Why You SHOULD Drink Coffee Daily (Hooray!)
I just LOVE the smell of a freshly-brewed cup of coffee, do you?
I have at least one cup of coffee each day. I’ve seen lots of headlines about coffee, and some say it’s good for you, and others say it’s not.
So what should we do – drink coffee, or not drink coffee?
The answer is – it depends.
Coffee has many benefits, some of which I outline below.
But we’re talking about normal, traditional coffee here. Not coffee with all the additives and creams and toppings and flavourings and other stuff.
Plain coffee (about 8 ounces (235ml) with a little honey or sweetener if you prefer) IS generally good for you if you drink it daily – although not if you drink the 30 cups a day that French author Balzac was supposed to have drunk!
It’s now the most popular drink in the world, and many people drink coffee daily. It tastes good, and it can give you some energy too.
But here are some interesting health reasons why you should drink 1 or 2 cups of plain coffee daily.
Drink Coffee Daily to Reduce Your Risk Of Diabetes
Poor lifestyle choices and diet are major causes of type 2 diabetes, and it’s increasingly common around the world. But 1 or 2 cups of coffee daily can actually help to reduce your risk of developing diabetes.
Scientists at Harvard School of Public Health evaluated data from 128,000 healthcare professionals who were surveyed about their diet choices for more than 20 years. During those two decades, 7,300 of them were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, but the ones who drank more than one cup of coffee daily, had an 11% lower risk for the disease.
In contrast, those who decreased their coffee consumption by more than a cup per day increased their type 2 diabetes risk by 17%.
Drink Coffee Daily to Prevent Cavities
Interestingly, coffee actually decreases tooth decay.
Several studies have shown that roasted coffee beans are antibacterial against S. mutans, the bacterium that causes tooth decay. Studies also show that roasted coffee prevents the absorption of such bacteria by the teeth.
In the studies, various types of coffee beans were used, both roasted and unroasted, Arabia and Robusta and while all of them provided similar benefits, the roasted varieties seemed to be more active in preventing bacteria from sticking to the teeth.
Drink Coffee Daily to Reduce Your Risk Of Alzheimer’s
Cases of Alzheimer’s disease are growing rapidly, but the brain and alertness benefits of drinking coffee daily may help to prevent or delay the onset of the disease.
Drink Coffee Daily to Improve Your Mood
Coffee contains caffeine, a nootropic that improves your mood as well as your cognitive functioning. In other words, it makes you more alert, and it also boosts your mood.
Drink Coffee Daily to Gain Antioxidants
Antioxidants are your body’s first line of defense against rogue free radicals, and coffee contains more than many fruits, including oranges and grapes.
Conclusion
In short, there are many good reasons to drink coffee daily. Avoid the over-sweet, high-calorie low-nutrition additives and drink plain coffee. When you limit yourself to one or two cups daily (preferably in the mornings so it doesn’t interfere with your sleep patterns), you get all the benefits that coffee brings – as well as the great taste!
