Greta Thunberg gave an absolutely “blistering” speech at the United Nations (UN) summit. You can see a 4-minute video of the highlights here. It was the most emotional speech I have seen her give. I have no idea.
So, what happened at the UN Summit, where world leaders gathered? Just days after millions of young people joined worldwide protests to demand emergency action on the climate crisis, China didn’t make any new plans for fighting the climate crisis, India repeated some old commitments and the US, Canada and Australia weren’t there. There were some positive moves – nearly 90 large companies promised to reach net zero emissions by 2050, while a handful of countries said they will be winding down coal use. But it’s not soon enough – and it’s obvious that most of the ambition was coming from developing countries, rather than the major polluters.

If you live in the UK, please do your bit to fight the climate emergency by signing up for the biggest mass tree-planting campaign in the UK’s history. The Big Climate Fightback campaign wants pledges from 1 million people. Local groups will run tree-planting events and councils will plant trees on their land, or outside schools and other publicly-owned properties. Homeowners and businesses are also being urged to plant trees on their own premises if possible.
