You’d love to grow some simple plants, but you don’t have Green Fingers? Leslie Land, lead author of 1000 Gardening Questions and Answers (available at amazon.com) suggests 6 easy plants.
Of course you still have to water them, but these really are the easiest things to grow (and be proud of). Here are her 6 recommendations.
Easy Herbs
Parsley tolerates partial shade, and mint likes things a bit shadier. As well as being a wonderful fresh herb, giant flat-leaf parsley also makes an excellent filler for flower arrangements.
Bright, Cheerful Tomatoes
If you have a sunny spot, enough space for a whiskey barrel-sized container, and a 5-foot support, try planting an “indeterminate” cherry tomato plant. This plant will keep getting bigger all summer, and you’ll get a lot more yield for your space compared to a regular tomato plant.
Tiny Trees Are a Talking Point
Dwarf Evergreens will grow happily in a sheltered location and not in direct sun.
You’ll need to go to a speciality nursery to find them, but they are far less labor-intensive than bonsai trees.
They look fabulous and they are a real talking point on your patio or in your garden!
Lots of Colour
Coreopsis is a long-blooming perennial that always looks sunny and cheerful.
It loves window boxes, according to Leslie Land, so you could use it brighten up the outside of your home.
It’s a sun-loving flower plant with bright yellow daisy-like flowers.
Decorative Plants
Coral Bells love partial shade and are pretty and decorative even when they’re not flowering.
Ground Covers / Creepers
Sedum – There are many different types of sedum in all different sizes.
They’re often used to carpet a roof, making it a ‘green’ roof that attracts bees and other wildlife.
Almost all sedum varieties are drought-resistant, and seldom bothered by insects or disease, which is about as trouble-free as it gets.

Love growing mint. It’s so easy for my “black” thumb! Trying cucumbers and spinach soon… Wish me luck!
A “black” thumb – I love it!
