And when it comes to weight loss, it’s all too easy to get stuck on making “less than ideal” decisions. And that’s one of the reasons why losing weight can be so difficult.

1. Go No Soda / Soft Drinks

Yes, you read that correctly – no soda or soft drinks.

No regular or normal sodas, and definitely NO DIET drinks. Soda in every form is bad (despite what the manufacturers and marketers tell you).

Yes, diet drinks may indeed be free of calories, but that doesn’t mean they’re free of adverse effects. In fact, many of the low-sugar / calorie-free diet sodas can hasten your development of metabolic syndrome, which can be worse than diabetes.

Water should be the main beverage in your weight loss arsenal.

Of course, it can get a bit boring after a while.

  • Consider a sodastream-type machine to add bubbles to your water.
  • Add fresh fruit such as berries, cucumber, melon, lemon, orange and more to your water for a lovely fresh taste.
  • And don’t forget tea – green tea is full of antioxidants, and there are some lovely herbal infusions that don’t contain caffeine so you can drink them any time.

2. Choose To Move More Everyday

Burning calories is the name of the game when it comes to weight loss, no matter how much or how little you need to lose.

Perhaps you hate the gym? No problem. There are loads of alternatives.

You can make clever weight loss decisions throughout each day that will have a profound effect on your weight loss goals.

Climbing stairs is great exercise – if you’re at home, get some music pumping and climb your own stairs. You can also do step-ups on your own stairs, instead of buying a plastic step block. When you go to the office or a shopping mall, walk up the stairs instead of taking the escalator or elevator.

Make sure you walk every day. Start off with short strolls if you need to, but get walking. Choose someone as a “walking buddy” – you’ll encourage each other. (My husband and I walk every morning – sometimes I don’t feel like it, but I feel I HAVE to go, and afterwards, I’m glad I did. It works the same way for him, too).

If the weather’s not great, you can still walk if you wear the correct clothes. Or stay indoors and march in place, lifting your knees up to hip-height each time. (It’s surprisingly good exercise!).

You see, here’s the thing.

You need to make deliberate decisions if weight loss is your goal.

Weight loss doesn’t happen by accident.

Small changes equate to big differences.

3. Load Your Plate With Veggies

Love tomatoes? Great! Then make them the cornerstone of your plate. Who cares how it looks? (You definitely won’t in a few weeks when you see your body change!).

Put veggies on your plate first – lots of them. They’re super low-calorie. Then add some protein – lean meat perhaps if you wish. If you want to add carbs, sweet potato or brown or wild rice are good options.

 

4. Go To Sleep Sooner

But there are two big weight loss benefits of getting enough sleep.

  1. When you’re sleep-deprived, you’re more likely to make bad choices about what to eat. When you get enough sleep, you’re more likely to plan your food and eat better.
  2. The later you stay awake, the more likely you are to snack. Unnecessary snacking, especially late at night, can spoil a hard day of work (and leave you moody too).

 

5. Make Meal Prep A Ritual

What’s the fastest way to sabotage a diet plan? Hunger.

It’s true! When you’re hungry you don’t give two hoots about whether it’s healthy, as long as it fills you.

Instead, plan your main meals and snacks.

If you’re cooking something like a casserole, one-pot dinner or lasagne, make at least double the quantity. It truly takes very little extra effort. Then freeze the excess.

I cook a big stew or lasagne or whatever at the weekend, when I have more time. Then I keep it refrigerated – and dinner during the week is as easy as re-heating it. (Add different veggies, sides or starches to ring the changes each night).
