Harley LED Lights add green to white light

Harley LED LightsThere’s a lot of buzz right now about Harley LED lights.

Of all the topics I may write about in this blog, Harley Davidson motorcycles was not at the top of my list.  It wasn’t even in the middle of the list.

OK, I’ll be honest.  It wasn’t on my list at all.

Perhaps Harley Davidsons are more eco friendly than SUVs, I don’t honestly know.

(If you know, please leave a comment!).  🙂

But I’m writing about them today because they’re promoting their LED headlamps, and they have a pretty convincing video.

LEDs are not new in cars, they’re used in brake lights and in strip light form for front lights.

But they are relatively new as main headlamps.

Harley LED lights provide a much brighter light, which can only improve night driving conditions.

What’s nice about Harley LED lights is that they can be retro-fitted (swap out the old incandescents for LEDs) easily.

I have a concern about oncoming traffic – if those lights are so bright, won’t oncoming traffic be blinded or suffer discomfort?  They’ve passed a lot of tests, so apparently not.

European car maker Opel are experimenting with a new type of headlight which automatically ‘dims’ the light for oncoming traffic without significantly affecting driver visibility, which seems like a dream come true.  But they’re still testing it, and it’s not available commercially yet.

In the meantime, using LEDs is green.  There’s a higher upfront cost of course, but as I’ve shown in other blogs on LEDs, they save money over the long term.

  • Clare,
Wow, what a powerful leds shown in the video. I do prefer white over yellow. I will keep driving my car though.

  • Hi Green Goddess,

Oh what a fun topic to address the best lights for Harley Davidson Owning motorcycle riders to use. Did you know they have a dedicated “Ladies of Harley” community section of the H.O.G. to serve their women riders? Marvelous American company and great bikes, indeed!

    • I didn’t know about the Ladies of Harley, that’s very interesting! Those bikes look heavy, and difficult to control if they fall over – brave women!

  • Amazing difference … I did not see the deer with the stock headlamp … and that could be disastrous.

    • I didn’t see the deer either. The LEDs do seem to make a massive difference, which improves safety considerably. Thanks Lyle!

  • Clare,
the biggest concern to me is the oncoming traffic. Hopefully Opel will find soon this new type of headlight which automatically ‘dims’ the light for oncoming traffic, because the danger is real.

  • And I have such a hard time seeing at night. Thanks for getting me excited about something I can’t have yet! LOL!

  • Many folks, even women, drive motorcycles in Costa Rica, as it is more economical. I think however, I will start with just a plain old bike. Do they have LED lights for regular bicycles????

  • Enjoyed the video-the difference was startling. I don’t ride bikes, never thought about it before.
    Thanks.

  • Oh my goodness what a huge difference. I don’t like driving in dark areas and these lights would be my saving grace.

  • YES Harley Davidson motorcycles are more eco friendly than SUV’s. LOL!!! All Motorcycles are.

Well maybe unless you go shopping and have to take 12 trips instead of 1. 😉

Motorcycle lights already bounce all over the place. Now that they are brighter it might have an adverse effect on other drivers.

    IDK
