Here’s Why You Should Add Healthy Fats to Smoothies
We seem to live in a fat-adverse society. Supermarket shelves are full of low-fat or fat-free products. But you DO need some fat for your health. You just need to make sure it’s the right fat – healthy fat.
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that I’m NOT a fan of low-fat foods. The goodness is taken out of the product, and artificial / chemical ingredients added instead. I prefer to eat a little of a full-fat food, than a lot of a low-fat food, it’s healthier.
But I digress. We’re talking about smoothies here.
And why it’s good to add healthy fats to smoothies.
Your body needs a certain amount of healthy fats to stay healthy. And those fats provide great benefits
The benefits of healthy fats
Here are some of the benefits of adding healthy fats to your diet:
- help keep your skin soft
- deliver fat-soluble vitamins
- protect your heart
- provide energy
- help curb overeating
- promote healthy hair, nails, and bones
- provide essential fatty acids
Sources of Healthy Fats
You want to choose monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, because they help lower cholesterol levels. (Saturated fats are found in fast food and are definitely not good for you).
Here are some of the best plant-based healthy fat sources. They’re all great to add to your smoothies!
Cashew Nuts are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which promote a healthy heart. Or you can use cashew milk if you prefer.
Coconut oil is known as an appetite suppressant, an energy booster and has antibacterial properties. You’ll get a healthy fat boost as well as a slight tropical flavor.
Avocado is a great source of monounsaturated fats, which help raise your “good” cholesterol levels. It will not only give you great fat content, but will also make your green smoothie extra creamy!
Flaxseeds supply both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are great for your heart and brain. Flaxseed is also high in fiber to keep things moving regularly.
Chia seeds: Just 1 oz / 30g of chia seeds contain over 8 grams of fat, most of which are made up of omega-3 fatty acids. This superfood also adds in extra fiber and protein, making it a must-have for a filling smoothie.
Another HUGE Advantage of Adding Healthy Fats to Smoothies
Depending on what fruit you add to your smoothie, the sugar count can get pretty high!
But did you know that adding healthy fats and protein to your smoothie helps your body break down those sugar carbs and use them as energy? So adding healthy fats to your smoothies can help to offset the sugars in fruit.
(You should always have more vegetables than fruit in your smoothies).
But What About Weight Loss?
Smoothies containing healthy fat obviously have more calories than the yummy weight-loss smoothies below (which you can download FREE by clicking on the picture below).
But because they’re more filling, these smoothies-with-healthy-fats help to stop you eating other stuff.
You need healthy fats for good health – like everything else, in moderation.
