Did you know that your oral health – the state of your teeth, mouth and tongue – is largely determined by what you eat and drink?

Read on to find out what’s best to protect your oral health – and who is most at risk of problems.

What is Oral Health?

Oral health is all about

  • Teeth – your teeth should be strong and disease-free. Tooth decay is all too common. Many of us develop cavities in our teeth which can lead to problems if they are not fixed up.
  • Gums should be healthy, not bleed, provide support to your teeth, and provide nutrients to them.
  • Your breath should not smell.
  • Your tongue should be flexible and free from sores.

Common Nutrients Needed for Oral Health

If you’re low in vitamins A and D, the enamel on your teeth may thin and so offer less protection.

Low vitamin C may lead to bleeding gums.

There are many B vitamins, and B deficiencies can lead to mouth inflammation, a burning sensation in your mouth, mouth ulcers and periodontal disease.

What To Eat for Healthy Teeth

Here are the best things to eat –

  • Lots of vegetables because they contain vitamin C, especially kale, cauliflower and broccoli, tomatoes, red bell peppers, lemons and limes.
  • Fermented foods such as kimchi and sauerkraut are high in B vitamins and good bacteria and enzymes to enhance your digestion too.
  • You’ll get B vitamins, iron and zinc from oily fish, poultry and eggs.
  • Fresh green smoothies are a great way to get more veggies into your diet. Click the picture above to get free recipes!

Be aware however, that if you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, you may have a higher risk of vitamin B deficiency, so you need to make sure you get B vitamins from foods such as avocados and dark leafy green vegetables.

What to Avoid

You already know this!

Try to avoid processed foods, junk foods, diet drinks, and sugary foods and drinks at least 80% of the time to protect your oral health.
